Ch 4, Post 1

I do not think that the American society should be referred to as a melting pot. The reverend Jesse Jackson refers to the United States as both a rainbow and a family quilt and i believe that his metaphor fit very well. The metaphor that I think works best for the American economy is a bowl of jelly beans. All of the jelly beans have a distinct flavor and color that make them so good all together in a bowl. Although each jelly bean is different each is important to try and experiences just like the many cultural values and practices of each race in America. Every person who lives in the United States should celebrate their own individuality and celebrate what makes them unique. With so many diverse people in the  United States speech communities, many people will learn how to communicate with those who may not be of the same race as them. I believe this is important to develop a new understanding of the sense of community.

  1. I am truly laughing out loud to your post; this is one of the most cutest posts I've read so far and I can really feel your personality through this one. But anyway, truly the only way is America is a melting pot is through our economy. Our money is really "dissolving" quickly. We are like a bowl of jelly beans, I must admit. But us be so "different" it is very hard to understand others (speech communities). I believe that's the downfall to American. So I totally agree with "develop a new understanding of the sense of community". The world won't be perfect, but it would be way easier to live in.-Peace&Love

  2. This is a really interesting because most people in United States are immigrants and all of us try to merge into American society. As mentioned by Lauren I totally agree that people in United States are like jelly beans with a distinct flavor and color. We all have our own importance and own cultural beliefs that we follow. But the trend that is followed today is more towards diversity or in multicultural society rather than assimilated society. The metaphor “melting pot” is not used in American society anymore because we have is a “Salad Bowl”. I personally think Jesse Jackson’s metaphor of rainbow is good because like rainbow American society also got different colored people. After all, living in America is all about freedom and learning more about other cultures including American cultural.

  3. I loved your example of American society as a bowl of jelly beans Even though America is often referred to as a melting pot; this is a metaphor that does not really fit. With a melting pot, everything is blended together. As for a bowl of jelly beans, they are all the same shape but come in different flavors. For America, we are all physically the same, but our cultures are different. I agree; I think we should all celebrate our culture and it is something we should be proud of. We are all different in our own ways. Great post this week!

  4. I think your metaphor for America is really clever, it makes sense because there are so many different flavors of jellybeans; just like there are so many different races. A melting pot just doesn't do us justice because all races don't just combine together; every single one has unique aspects and characteristics. i agree with you that people should learn different ways to communicate with different cultures because it gives them a better understanding of their community but also because it helps them become less self centered towards their own race. There are also different color jellybeans, which symbolize the different races.
